Italy’s high-speed trains will be equipped with a reliable broadband access system developed by Telecom Italia in co-operation withe the Italian State Railways.

Passengers will be able to connect their computers to the internet via UMTS USB modems, or via the new on-board Wi-Fi system, which ensures high quality continuous connections. Alcatel-Lucent signed a cooperation agreement with Telecom Italia to engage in a new technology development program, including a trial of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless broadband technology.

Telecom Italia is now operating a pre-commercial trial of “4G” LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology in Turin.

HanseNet, a German retail broadband carrier is being sold by Telecom Italia to Telefonica, one of Telecom Italia’s main shareholders.
