Broadband mobile and Wi-Fi access on high-speed trains

Italy’s high-speed trains will be equipped with a reliable broadband access system developed by Telecom Italia in co-operation withe the Italian State Railways.

Passengers will be able to connect their computers to the internet via UMTS USB modems, or via the new on-board Wi-Fi system, which ensures high quality continuous connections. Alcatel-Lucent and Telecom Italia to trial LTE technologies

Alcatel-Lucent signed a cooperation agreement with Telecom Italia to engage in a new technology development program, including a trial of 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless broadband technology.

LTE trial in Turin

Telecom Italia is now operating a pre-commercial trial of “4G” LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology in Turin.

€ 75 m are up for grab in Italy for mobile operators willing to supply the national railways with a full range of mobile connectivity services over 2 years.
