In 2008 for the first time in its long history, Telecom Italia lowered its total electricity consumption. It’s the first result of a energy-saving plan aiming to reduce its total power consumption by 12% from 2007 to 2011.
Telecom Italia is the second biggest electricity power user in Italy (after the national railway company) and its electricity consumption in 2008 totalled 2,117 GWh, roughly equivalent to the average consumption of a 400.000 inhabitants town.
66% of it was due to the fixed network, 9% to the mobile network, 15% to offices, 10% to IT equipment.
In 2008, the total electricity consumption was 37 GWh lower than the year before.
Here are some of the actions taken by Telecom Italia so far to reduce its electricity bill:
- New higher efficiency HVAC systems
- Higher temperatures allowed in switching centres and base stations
- New power efficient network equipment
- New high efficient cogeneration plants
- More renewable sources, photovoltaic and mixed wind/photovoltaic
